The driver of a 1971 Chevrolet C-10 pick-up truck was traveling east on Interstate 10 near the Horizon City exit. The driver of the gray truck, for some unknown reason, veered right off the interstate causing the front right of the vehicle to strike a light pole with a cement post.
The truck went airborne for about 88 feet coming to rest on its left side facing south in the dirt median. The driver was partially ejected from the truck causing the vehicle to land on top of the driver at the point of rest. He was wearing a seat belt. Attempts to revive at the scene failed. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Medical Examiner. A witness reports seeing the vehicle veer off the roadway for an unknown reason.
The driver is identified as James Gentry (35 years old) of the 6000 block of Alina Baltazar, of El Paso County, Texas. One lane of the interstate was shut down to traffic for approximately 3 hours. It is unknown if speed or alcohol are contributing factors. The accident is still under investigation. An autopsy and toxicology report is pending. This is the 20th fatality of the year compared to 14 at this time last year.
